Trends in traffic electrification, such as automobiles, railways and renewable energy demand, the power electronics market is becoming more stable. Analysts predict that the passive device market will rocket in the next decade, and the demand for power capacitors in the automotive industry will increase from 17% in 2015 to 37% in 2021. The demand for inductors and transformers will grow from 6% to 19% in the same period, .
The challenges of power converters are mainly due to the increase of switching frequency, the increase of semiconductor junction temperature and the reduction of system size. These three factors directly or indirectly affect the functions required by the passive components. As new technologies emerge, more efficient and integrated converters can meet the requirements which are more complicated, primarily in silicon carbide and gallium nitride semiconductors.
Magnetic components are also facing challenges. Silicon carbide and gallium nitride have the advantage of being able to drive at high frequencies from hundreds of kilohertz to megahertz, which means that core materials and designs need to be reconsidered.
